Doctor Solar - The Origin Begins!

Plot Summary: (two stories in this issue)

Revelation Part One:That Day Of Wrath
In the first part of this double feature issue we see the rise of Tanek Nuro, a ruthless investor who is determined to use his scientific resources to unlock the secrets of Doctor Solar and claim his power for himself.

Solar Rise Part One:Saboteur
In the second feature we finally see the origin and the experiment that turned Philip Solar into Doctor Solar, The Man Of The Atom. Was it an accident or was someone operating on behalf of a mysterious benefactor to sabotage the experiment that granted Doctor Solar his awesome abilities?

Comic writer JC Vaughn (Check out some of his work at Moonstone Publishing...!) has publicly stated that this is the best he's ever seen from Jim Shooter. JC is also co-writing Mighty Samson from Dark Horse Comics. Well I can't wait to find out if those words ring true when all is said and done...!

Dark Horse Comics: MRF and Mighty Sampson.....Finally!

Well Magnus Robot Fighter and Mighty Samson showed up in my pull box, to my surprise.

Issue 3 for Mags....#2 for Samson. Honestly I forgot I was even reading these due to the EXTREMELY LONG DELAY on the release of these. Hell, I love Jim Shooter's stories, but with a dwindling print run, and delays, I was wondering if these books were headed for cancellation!

I'll start with Magnus Robot Fighter, issue 3 was delayed for about three months. The story was just getting rolling in issue two with Magnus actually running away from a battle with a brute of a man, the cyborg known as "Big Guns." He is an enforcer for underground organized crime bosses. The second issue has Magnus interrupting a slave auction. The "metal mob" is involved in human trafficking, actually selling young girls as sex slaves, and others to be used as food to alien races! Our hero was searching the lower levels of the city, known as the "Goph-lands," for a senator's daughter, Leeja Clane. Leeja was abducted by a group of robots, to be transported to the auction site. In retrospect, Leeja was Magnus' love interest in the Valiant Comics and Dell books. A sharp contrast to the traditional Magnus, he is "shacking up" with a piece of eye candy (Cinnette Victoria) in the DH storyline. Leeja shows guarded interest in Magnus, but as issue three wraps up, she shows up in his time of need.

Metal Mob: Prizefighter Part Three starts off at a match (think MMA cagefights) between the undefeated robot champion Steelhammer, and a genetically enhanced challenger named Scrapper. The challenger stands up against the robots punishing blows for a few panels, but as the ref calls the fight, a killing blow ends the match. (quite brutal, and lots of blood in this scene) These matches are a huge source of revenue for the mob, and are sent out as pirated broadcasts to the masses. The matches are held in a secret location, with a crowd that is completely holographic, to guard against any outsiders leaking the itinerary. Magnus watches the video feed from Cinnette's residence, stating that while it is horrible to see, its not his fight....

But what the hell, right? He's Magnus ROBOT FIGHTER. The story continues with a glimpse into the supporting characters, both the Mobsters and Magnus' network of contacts, culminating in a Battle between Magnus and Steelhammer before setting up the next issue.

Jim Shooter is pushing Magnus into uncharted territory, and it looks to be a fun ride, with plenty of action and plot to go around. The new costume looks great, almost similar to the Valiant Comics post-Malev War Magnus. The artwork is stellar, but just a tad bit heavy on the inks, in my opinion. One particular panel bugged me -Page 11, Panel 5. Magnus enters the "home" of Little Eddie - a contact he uses in the Goph level to gather info - and his foot looks like a 10 year drew it....I think it's due to the black boots and heavy inking.

But that is minor, and the Fanboy in me will of course win out. So here's to a great story so far...I hope Magnus and Jim have finally found a home for good @ DHC.

Look for a follow up on Mighty Samson next week. It's too good to miss!

Magnus Robot Figher from Dark Horse Comics

Magnus Robot Fighter Returns! Proud and excited that he has found another home at Dark Horse Comics. You may or may not remember that he was a part of the original Valiant Comics run in the early to late 90's. (If you do then check out Valiantfans.com) The founder of Valiant, Jim Shooter has also return to write these issues. If you have some time to kill, spend a few hours on Wikipedia, after searching his name. The man has done it all, so to speak.

Also returning from the pages of Valiant Comics are Doctor Solar, and Turok. Gamers may remember the Turok games from Acclaim when they owned the property rights.

I'll keep you posted with a synopsis of each issue. Welcome back heroes!
